A Day in the Life of a Resident

ER call

3 pm: Check report corrections from prior day on ER shift. Discuss prior cases with attending.

4 pm-12 am midnight: Take the on-call phone from day resident. Check the ER and Trauma list and read plain films and CTs. As a first year, you can consult a senior resident on with you for any questions. From 4 pm -8 pm, there will also be an attending on site that you can consult. You will not have time to take any naps. Your senior resident will buy you dinner from the restaurant of your choice for your hard work because they are getting paid moonlighting money.

12 am: Hand the phone over to the overnight resident and go home to rest up for the next day.

IR rotation

8a:
-Arrive and check board for list of IR procedures. Follow attending with greatest number of interesting procedures.
-Check list of unread CT angio studies.
-Review IR procedures before patient arrives. Scrub into IR procedures and participate as much as possible.
-Between IR procedures, read CT angiogram cases.

12-1p: Resident conference

1-4p: Continue with IR procedures and go over CT angio cases with attending. Make sure all cases are logged into caselog system.

4p: Go home.

GI rotation

8 am: Arrive and review the procedures for the day. Discuss the procedures with the supervising attending for the day.

8:30 am: Start with scheduled outpatients and any emergent inpatients.

12 pm: Lunch and lecture

1 pm: Perform genitourinary procedures e.g. HSG and VCUGs.

3 pm: Go over reports with attending.

4 pm: Go home.

Fun Facts

Attendings are ultimately responsible for completing the scheduled list.
No 24 hour call. Maximum call scheduled is 15 hours.
Resident business hours are 8a-4p.
